Siemens Convergence Creators presents results on conducive collaboration settings

Innovation is always an investment into the future. Even though the success of innovation efforts cannot always be foreseen, well-founded innovation management is the basis for innovation effectiveness. Delivering products, solutions and services that delight our customers – that is at the core of Siemens Convergence Creators. But: Where do all the good ideas come from?

Finding the right cooperation and motivational settings to create market-oriented ideas is a crucial challenge for every innovation manager. This being said, Siemens Convergence Creators co-operated with the University of Ravensburg-Weingarten to find out which settings work best.

After having presented the results at various international conferences and in scientific papers, Hans-Jürgen August, Vice President Innovation and Quality Management at Siemens Convergence Creators, was invited as speaker at the 5. Innovation Day, hosted by Casinos Austria in Vienna, to share Siemens Convergence Creators’ experiences. With 330 participants representing around 100 companies the conference was sold out.

What are the key findings? Of course Open Innovation, still a buzzword in innovation management, is a key element of every idea creation and innovation activity. In line with other publications, particularly settings with strong customer involvement are most promising. On the other hand, and again confirming other studies, unstructured and untargeted Open Innovation approaches are seen as less effective.

Are there any hidden potentials to be discovered? “Our heads are round so our thoughts can change direction”, said French artist Francis Picabia, and so it makes sense to also consider the other direction of the value chain. Consider innovation cooperation with suppliers and other partners, even from other industry sectors: Isn’t there possibly more in it?

In a company with ubiquitous technical expertise and deep domain know-how the creative potential of the own employees is a most valuable source of innovation. Accordingly, Siemens Convergence Creators has set up a holistic environment to foster and support idea creation, selection and implementation. Crucial to the success of an innovation system is to consider all elements – a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Thus customer and market orientation is as important as sharing knowledge on a global scale, an inspiring and supportive environment is as meaningful as lean and effective processes facilitating decision taking and short time-to-market cycles. 

In the end, it’s all about people – and creativity that fuels business in the 21st century.
